Band

Beginning Band: M/J BAND 1

The purpose of this course is to enable students who have little to no experience in playing a band instrument to develop fundamental skills on wind or percussion instruments through the refinement and performance of middle school band literature. Students in this course will learn the orchestral instruments, fundamentals of music theory, music history, how to appropriately produce a sound on an instrument, proper instrument playing posture, how to read and play instrumental music, and so much more. The purchase/rental of instruments is recommended for most students but students that test well on the instruments such as the tuba, trombone, euphonium, French horn, bassoon, and baritone saxophone, will have the option of using the school’s instruments for a small fee. Students in this course will need to purchase a uniform (white tuxedo shirt, black dress pants, dress black socks and dress black shoes), an instrument, instrument related accessories, and a method book.

Intermediate Band

The purpose of this course is to enable students who have at least (1) year of playing in band to develop fundamental skills on wind or percussion instruments through the refinement and performance of middle school band literature. Students in this course will continue study of music fundamentals on their primary instrument. Students enrolled in this course will be required to participate in Solo & Ensemble Performances, Music Performance Assessment (MPA) Concert, as well as Fall, Winter, and Spring Concerts. Enrollment in this course will require attendance to rehearsals and performances. Students in this course will need to purchase a white tuxedo shirt, black dress pants, dress black socks and dress black (closed toe) shoes for the concert performances.

Advanced Band

The purpose of this course is to enable students who have at least 2 years of playing in band to develop fundamental skills on wind or percussion instruments through the refinement and performance of middle school band literature. Students in this course will continue study of music fundamentals on their primary instrument. Students enrolled in this course will be required to participate in Solo & Ensemble Performances, Music Performance Assessment (MPA) Concert, as well as Fall, Winter, and Spring Concerts on campus. Enrollment in this course will require attendance to rehearsals and performances. Students in this course will need to purchase a white tuxedo shirt, black dress pants, dress black socks and dress black (closed toe) shoes for the concert performances.

Jazz Band

The purpose of this course is to enable students with a minimum of two years playing a band instrument to develop fundamental skills on wind or percussion instruments through the refinement and performance of middle school jazz band literature. Students in this course will learn the history of jazz, various styles of jazz, fundamentals of jazz theory, improvisation, and be given solo opportunities. Students enrolled in this course will be required to participate in Solo & Ensemble Performances, Music Performance Assessment (MPA) Concert, as well as Fall, Winter, and Spring Concerts on campus. Enrollment in this course will require attendance to rehearsals and performances. Students in this course will need to purchase a white tuxedo shirt, black dress pants, dress black socks and dress black (closed toe) shoes as well as a fedora hat and colored tie, for the concert performances.
